How Often Does Your House Need a Repaint?
A fresh coat of paint protects your home and lifts its value — but how often is it actually needed? Here's a simple guide for Port Macquarie homeowners.

A good paint job does more than look great — it's your home's first line of defence against the weather, the sun and the salt air. But paint doesn't last forever, and waiting too long to repaint can let small problems turn into expensive ones. So how often should you actually be repainting?
Exterior: every 5 to 10 years
Most homes need an exterior repaint every 5 to 10 years, but the right timing depends on a few things:
- Surface type. Timber and weatherboard tend to need repainting more often than rendered or brick surfaces, because they move and weather faster.
- Sun exposure. Walls that cop the harsh Port Macquarie sun all day will fade and break down sooner than shaded ones.
- Coastal conditions. Salt air is tough on paintwork. Homes closer to the coast often need attention at the shorter end of that range.
- Quality of the last job. A properly prepped, quality two-coat job lasts far longer than a quick once-over.
Interior: every 7 to 10 years (sooner for high-traffic areas)
Inside, paint is protected from the weather, so it lasts longer. As a rough guide:
- Living areas and bedrooms: every 7–10 years.
- Hallways, kids' rooms and high-traffic zones: every 3–5 years, as they pick up scuffs and marks faster.
- Kitchens and bathrooms: every 3–7 years, since moisture and grease take their toll.
Signs it's time, regardless of the calendar
Don't just go by years. Repaint sooner if you notice fading, chalky residue when you rub the wall, flaking or peeling, cracking, or gaps opening up around joints and trims. These are signs the paint is no longer protecting the surface underneath.

The bottom line
Repainting on time is far cheaper than repairing the damage that comes from leaving it too long. If your home is creeping toward that 5–10 year mark — or you've spotted any of the warning signs above — it's worth getting it looked at.
