Maintenance
How Often Should You Re-Stain Your Timber?
Timber decks, fences and feature timber need regular care to stay protected and looking sharp. In Port Macquarie's climate, that can mean attention as often as every 6 months.

Timber adds warmth and character to any home — decks, pergolas, fences, screens and feature cladding all look fantastic. But timber is also one of the most demanding surfaces to maintain. Left unprotected, it dries out, greys off, cracks and rots. The key to keeping it looking great is staying on top of the staining.
How often? As often as every 6 months for exposed timber
In our climate, highly exposed timber can need re-staining or a maintenance coat roughly every 6 months. That sounds like a lot, but Port Macquarie's strong sun, humidity and coastal conditions are brutal on timber finishes. Horizontal surfaces like decking — which take the full force of the sun and foot traffic — wear fastest of all.
As a general guide:
- Decks and other heavily exposed, high-traffic timber: check every 6 months; expect to re-coat around every 6–12 months.
- Fences, screens and vertical timber: usually every 1–2 years, as they weather more slowly than horizontal surfaces.
- Covered or shaded timber: less often again, but still worth checking yearly.
How to tell it's due
Do a quick water test: splash a little water on the timber. If it beads up, the coating is still working. If it soaks straight in and darkens the timber, the protection has worn off and it's time to re-stain. Other tell-tale signs are fading colour, a dry or greyish look, and a rough feel underfoot.

Why staying on schedule saves you money
The trap with timber is that once it dries out and starts to grey or crack, you can't just re-coat it — it needs to be sanded back and fully prepped first, which costs far more than a routine maintenance coat. A light re-stain on schedule is cheap insurance against an expensive restoration later.
