Choosing Paint Colours for Coastal Homes: A Port Macquarie Guide
Salt air, harsh sun and coastal light change how paint colours actually read on a house. Here's how to pick colours that hold up — and look great — in Port Macquarie.

Coastal Port Macquarie light is bright, high-contrast and unforgiving. A colour that looked calm on a swatch under fluorescent lighting can read as icy-blue on a north-facing wall by 11am — or as a hard, dirty grey by late afternoon. If you live by the coast, colour selection isn't just about taste; it's about how paint behaves in this specific light, against this specific landscape.
This is our practical guide, based on jobs across Port Macquarie, Lake Cathie, Bonny Hills and the Camden Haven, to picking exterior and interior colours that still look great in two years — not just in the paint shop.
Start with the whites — but don't pick a cold one
Whites are the most common exterior choice on the coast, and the most commonly botched. Bright cool whites can glare in the summer sun and look sterile against the blue of the ocean and sky. Warm off-whites and soft, chalky whites sit much better in coastal light — they read as fresh without feeling clinical, and they don't fight the natural surroundings.
- Warm off-whites work best on rendered coastal facades — they soften the glare and photograph beautifully.
- Very cool bright whites can go 'blue' under our sky. Test them at midday, not at dusk.
- Trim colour matters: a slightly warmer or crisper trim against a body colour gives depth without needing bold contrast.
Coastal greys — get the undertone right
Greys are safe until you pick the wrong undertone. Blue-greys can go icy and cold in our summer light. Warm greys with a soft green or beige undertone hold up much better on exteriors, especially on weatherboard and Hardies homes across the region.
For interiors, mid-warm greys handle the strong coastal light spilling through big windows without going flat. Very dark greys can look moody and beautiful — but only in rooms with the right light. We'll always suggest sampling before committing.
Coastal blues, greens and earthy neutrals
If you want colour without going bold, muted coastal blues and soft sage greens both age well on Port Macquarie homes. They lean into the setting instead of fighting it. Earthy warm neutrals — think putty, mushroom and soft taupes — are having a big moment on both interiors and exteriors, and they're incredibly forgiving under changing light through the day.

Bold and dark — done well
Charcoal, deep navy and near-black exteriors look striking on modern coastal homes, but they need thought. Dark colours absorb heat, so surface prep and product choice matter more. We use exterior systems specifically rated for dark colours so the paint holds up through summer without cracking or fading fast.
The one rule: sample on your actual walls
Colours behave differently on brick, render, weatherboard and Hardies. They shift with orientation — a north-facing wall gets very different light to a south-facing one. And they shift by time of day. The only reliable way to pick a coastal exterior colour is to see it painted, in a decent-sized patch, on the actual surface, across a full day of light.
That's why every MSG quote includes free colour help — we bring sample pots, brush out proper test patches and check them with you before a single wall gets rolled. It's a small step that saves people from repainting the whole exterior in a colour they don't like.
How this ties into your job
Colour selection is the last piece of the puzzle, but it's also the most personal. On the interior side, we can talk through colour families room-by-room. On the exterior side, we'll factor in surface type, aspect, roof colour and neighbouring homes so the finish sits nicely in the street.
